Located in the heart of the Bronx, New York, this place is just incredible! I've been there twice now, once when the rose garden was starting to bloom, and once during daylily season. The display gardens are extensive and planted with all sorts of interesting combinations, and there is even a 40 acre forest criss crossed with hiking trails to explore. If you are ever in the metropolitan NY area, don't miss this garden! |

The rose garden in early June-not yet peak, but just spectacular anyway! |
Here are a couple of planting combinations that really caught my eye. I especially like the effect of the massed violas at the feet of yellow flag iris. Some of the plants I notice that are repeated throughout the garden are oakleaf hydrangea, variegated red twig dogwood, coppiced purple smoke bush, and various varieties of miscanthus. I must admit, these are some of my favoite garden stalwarts, too-they are easy care, perform well, and pack more than a single season of interest. As you peruse my garden pages, you will see that I am also a big fan of variegated and interesting color foliage. It carries the garden at ties when nothing is blooming and adds to the overall effect. |
These shots show the Enid A. Haupt conservatory on the grounds of the NYBG. It showacses an extensive plant collection from rainforest to desert and everything in between. |
